Gossip Girl Showrunner Explains How the Series Recreated The Met Gala
*Spoilers for HBO Max's Gossip Girl ahead!*
If you tuned into the finale of HBO Max's Gossip Girl reboot, then you may have noticed your favorite Upper East Siders hit the red carpet at the Met Gala. The episode was set in at a location so spot-on that you would've sworn it was actually filmed during fashion's biggest night, but it wasn't. Gossip Girl showrunner Joshua Safran explained to Vanity Fair how the show went about recreating the 2022 Met Gala.
According to Safran, the show initially considered filming at the actual gala, but they ultimately decided to recreate it instead. "We built a replica of the stairs to a size," he said. "It's probably the most expensive set we've ever built for the show—like by far."
To give the faux-Met Gala real-life credibility, Gossip Girl recruited Vogue's José Criales-Unzueta and Oscar de la Renta's Fernando Garcia to give the allure of actually attending the Met Gala.
If you tuned into the finale, you saw GG leading lady Jordan Alexander wearing the same Oscar de la Renta dress Taylor Swift wore to MTV's Video Music Awards in August 2022.
Gossip Girl costume designer Eric Daman shared why he decided to pick the gown. "The minute I saw that dress, I just knew that it was such a special, one-of-a-kind [piece] — what Julien Calloway would wear to the Met." According to Daman, "No one had actually worn it yet; it is a very difficult dress to wear. It's just layers and layers of crystal — it is very heavy."
Although Gossip Girl's fashionable series finale didn't end at the actual Met Gala, GG star Thomas Doherty hit the red carpet at the Met Gala in May 2022.
Evan Mock attended the 2022 Met Gala also.
