Who Got Their Torch Snuffed Out Last Night on 'Survivor'

After a long wait, we officially have another season of Survivor. There’s $1 million on the line, and 18 contestants who are willing to do just about anything to get it. And with the season shortened down to just 26 days, the stakes feel a little higher this year. And from the first episode alone, it’s clear whoever wins this season will have to deal with a lot along the way.

This season, tribes will have minimal supplies to start. There’s no rice, no canned goods or other sustenance. All they receive is a pot, flint, and a machete. That’s just enough to forage their way around the island. And food already is a must for anyone to have, but it’s imperative when every day is a new physical and mental challenge that takes everything within you to accomplish.

With all that contestants have to go through, it only makes it that more emotional to see them go home. Knowing all the literal blood, sweat, and tears they’ve endured to stay in the game can make their exit feel pretty heart-wrenching. If they had just made more alliances, or seen the writing on the wall enough to find an immunity idol, maybe they wouldn’t be going home? But alas, it’s Survivor and no matter how well you play the game, only one person can come out on top.

But whether someone was on the show for one episode or made it to the finale, everyone deserves a pat on the back and some recognition for even attempting a show as intense as this one. Here’s who went home in each episode of Survivor season 41. And in case you want to know exactly how it all went down, we also have recaps for each episode.

Episode 4

  • Ua Tribe (Green): JD

For the second time this season, Shan convinced JD to give her his advantage as a sign of trust. Then, Shan and the rest of the Green Tribe completely blindsided JD and decided to vote him out. Initially, the majority decided to eliminate Genie, but they all secretly voted him out instead due to his advantage and sneaky gameplay.

Episode 5

  • Ua Tribe (Green): Genie

With only three people left in the Green Tribe and an alliance between Ricard and Shan, it's clear who's on the chopping block: Genie. There was some tension between Shan and Ricard, since Shan gave him her extra vote as insurance, and he refused to give it back after she left for a secret advantage decision after the immunity challenge. Still, even with friction between them, they band together to vote out Genie.

Episode 6

No one is voted out since the tribes are merging.

Episode 7

  • Merged Tribe: Sydney

In one of the best elimination councils in recent Survivor memory, the now-merged contestants go back and forth, debating whether or not to use their advantages to help their allies stay in the game. Evvie, Deshawn, and Sydney are the ones on the chopping block. Liana uses her Knowledge is Power perk on Xander, who plans ahead and gives both his advantages to Evvie and Tiffany. Ultimately, he chooses to not use his extra vote or immunity idol, since he believes Evvie won't be voted out. After lots of huddled whispering and the game's first Shot in the Dark, Sydney is the next person voted out of Survivor.

Episode 8

  • Merged Tribe: Tiffany

Everyone in the former Yase tribe (besides Liana) knows they're on the chopping block this episode. Evvie, Xander, and Tiffany spend the episode trying to get into everyone's good graces. Then Evvie wins the episode's elimination challenge, so she's safe for the night. During deliberations before voting, Heather, Xander, Tiffany, and Naseer were in trouble for being either too weak in their gameplay, or too strategic. Unfortunately, Tiffany was the one tribe member unable to gather enough allies to keep her spot in the tribe.

Episode 9

  • Merged Tribe: Naseer, Evvie

In yet another surprising twist this season, Jeff announced there would be two people eliminated. And to add more tension to the tribe's alliances, players competed in the episode's challenge in two groups, and then continued to be separated for the rest of the evening, all the way to tribal council. Xander and Erika won the challenge and immunity, then split off to separate beaches with their groups. In the first group, Shan, Heather, Naseer, Erika, and Ricard were together.

Jeff counted the votes, and with Shan's extra vote advantage, there was a split between Naseer and Heather. In a second vote, where players could only vote for Heather or Naseer, Naseer was the one eliminated.

As for the second group, Xander, Evvie, Liana, Danny, and DeShawn all went to tribal council together. Despite Xander and Evvie's best efforts, they couldn't convince DeShawn to turn on Liana. And Xander decided not to use his idol to give Evvie immunity. So the majority of the group, Liana, Danny and DeShawn, voted for Evvie.

Episode 10

  • Merged Tribe: Shan

In one of the major blindsides of the season, Shan, a powerful player throughout the entire season, was voted out. DeShawn and Ricard, two close allies to Shan, managed to orchestrate the vote without her knowing. So despite possessing an immunity idol, Shan was none the wiser.

Episode 11

  • Merged Tribe: Liana

As the tribe whittles down to the final six players, tensions are high. With Shan out of the way, it's just about anyone's game. That said, DeShawn and Ricard both have targets on their backs since they orchestrated Shan's elimination.

Right before the immunity challenge, Jeff introduces another twist to the show: Do or Die. If you decide to participate in the week's challenge, the first person out will be in a game of chance that decides if they go home immediately and remove the need for a tribal vote, or stay in the game for another day, with immunity at tribal. Everyone picks rocks to decide if they want to participate; Heather and Liana decide to sit out. The first person out if DeShawn. The winner of the challenge? Danny. His first the individual immunity of the entire season.

At tribal, DeShawn steps up for his Do or Die challenge. There are three boxes. Two have skulls, meaning he is immediately eliminated, and one has a fire, which means he stays in the game and can't be voted out tonight. Fortunately, he gets the fire symbol and stays. When it comes down to a vote, Liana and Ricard nearly tie for a vote, but Xander uses his extra vote to eliminate Liana.

Episode 12

  • Merged Tribe: Danny

Alliances are tested as the tribe narrows down to the season's final five. Erika, DeShawn, and Xander agree to help each other make it to the final three after they win the reward challenge (and get some much needed protein in the form of chicken and vegetables).

Ricard and DeShawn are two major players in the game, and at the immunity challenge, it's Ricard who ends up with immunity, putting DeShawn on the chopping block alongside his friend Danny.

Although he hunts for an idol, Danny comes up empty. At the tribal vote, DeShawn, convinced he's going home, decides to drop a "truth bomb," outing his supposed ally Erika and revealing she said she didn't want to take Heather to the end of the game. When it comes down to the vote, the tribe is split between DeShawn and Danny. Jeff calls for a second vote, and the tribe decides to eliminate Danny.

Finale

It's everyone for themselves in this hours-long finale. There's only two immunity challenges left. But first, there's an advantage for one lucky player to find.

Erika manages to snag the advantage before everyone else, which gives her an up in the second-to-last immunity challenge. So, who wins the actual challenge? Erika, of course. She then gets to decide who will get an extra reward with her and chooses her friend Heather.

Meanwhile, the men back at camp try to figure out which of them is probably going home. It comes down to DeShawn or Ricard, since Xander still has an idol. At tribal, it turns out Ricard loses his chance at the final three.

And then there were four.

Xander wins the final immunity challenge, and then gets to decide who he's taking with him automatically into the final three. He makes it pretty clear it's Erika, leaving DeShawn and Heather to fight for their lives with the fire-making challenge.

When it comes to making fire, Heather initially looks like she'll take the win, but DeShawn blows her out of the water. That brings our final three to DeShawn, Erika, and Xander. And now it's time for the jury. Oh, and the vote reading is going to happen right away, instead of in a separate reunion special.

DeShawn is questioned for his shaky alliances and emotional gameplay. Xander is asked about whether keeping his advantages close was strategic or luck (he says a bit of both), and Erika is asked why she didn't make as many social connections as the other two in the final three.

Ultimately, the votes are almost unanimous. And the winner of Survivor Season 41 is...

Erika!
