Guardians of the Galaxy 3 spoilers follow.

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has confirmed fan theories about the fate of Chukwudi Iwuji's villain the High Evolutionary.

The character had an ambiguous fate at the end of the film, seemingly dying after being left onboard an exploding ship. However fans were quick to point out that a death doesn't always count in Marvel films unless you see it on screen.

Gunn has now weighed in on the discussion, responding to an article on Twitter which shows Drax carrying an unconscious High Evolutionary from the ship before it explodes and confirming speculation about the character's fate.

"For people who want the spoiler, what's pointed out in the article is very much in the movie," he tweeted.

The director then went on to reveal what happened next, adding that the character was now "imprisoned" on the Guardians' headquarters Knowhere.

Explaining why the group chose to spare the High Evolutionary's life, Gunn explained that it was down to a change in Rocket's outlook on life.

"They discuss Rocket's change at High Evo's body (& they don’t all agree). That's the whole point," he added in a follow-up tweet.

"And he doesn't have a code against killing when it’s necessary - that's explained in the first post credits - but he won't kill just because he’s angry anymore. He's come to see the sanctity of all life."

Gunn's comments come follow on from High Evolutionary actor Chukwudi Iwuji revealing that an alternative ending for had been filmed for the movie, hinting that it covered more of the character's fate.

"Let me just put it this way. I'm hoping you'll see an extended version or maybe an alternate ending, you know, that we certainly did film," he told Comicbook.com.
