Under the new law, solitary confinement is limited to no more than 15 consecutive days.

- A new law brings some significant changes for the use of solitary confinement in New York state prisons and jails. Governor Cuomo signed legislation that now ends long term solitary confinement for inmates. It will now be limited to no more than 15 consecutive days. It also bans entirely for certain prisoners including minors, those over 55, pregnant inmates, and those with disabilities or serious mental illness. This new law takes effect next year.
