DeSantis foreign policy wastes Florida money

The Florida Division of the Emergency Management has spent $50 million to airlift Americans out of Israel. Another $615,000 was spent on flying undocumented migrants from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. We have no idea how much has been spent on Florida Armed Services sent to the southwest United States to stem the flow of immigrants coming over the Mexican border. I am all for humanitarian aid but have any of the other 49 governors used taxpayer funds for it?

We have a teacher shortage, a shortage of agricultural workers, a proliferation of ethnic and racial attacks, an upsurge of gun violence, an affordable housing shortage and a homeowners insurance catastrophe. These issues threaten the quality of life for all Floridians. Shouldn’t Floridians expect their tax dollars be used for their benefit? Where do the taxpayers of Florida go to indict the Florida Division of the Emergency Management, the governor, and the Legislature for fiscal malfeasance? Didn’t they take an oath to serve the people of Florida?

Delray will benefit from historic label

Re the Nov. 4 letter "Don't make Atlantic Ave. 'historic' and kill its success:" I must share a preservationist viewpoint. Designating an area historic by no means detracts from its economic vitality. In fact, designated historic districts add to the local economy. A U.S. Chamber of Commerce study found that American towns that make historic preservation a priority enjoy an economic dividend to the local economy. Additionally, heritage tourism has a greater impact on a local economy with heritage tourists spending 15% more than non-heritage tourists. Small and local businesses often show a preference for locating in historic commercial areas. In study after study, the rate of value increase in historic districts outperforms the market as a whole.

Biden must push Israel to end violence

The carnage in Israel, intensified by the lethal attack on Israel by Hamas and the overblown counterattack on Gaza by the Israelis, has taken the lives of over 11,000 people, the great majority civilians, including many children. I'm a Humanist, neither Jew nor Muslim, and I deplore killing people, particularly innocent civilians and children. The power to stop the carnage now rests entirely with the Israeli government and to some extent with our own government, which has greenlighted the overblown and continuing genocide on the Israeli side. Unless President Biden uses maximum pressure to stop the Israelis, I will not vote for him. I believe many agree and Biden, who I voted for in 2020, will quite probably lose. I believe Jews, Muslims and Christians should have peace. But killing each other is not the way. Ending the carnage doesn't solve the problem but it's a start.
