California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced his intentions to speed up the rollout of the coronavirus vaccine, boldly promising that 1 million more residents will be inoculated against the fast-spreading disease by next Sunday.

The Democratic leader added that while those at highest-risk will still receive priority — a group that includes front line healthcare workers, the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions — there would be more “flexibility” in determining who will receive the next treatment and when.

“We have a specific goal of a million vaccinations in the next 10 days,” said Newsom before quickly correcting himself. Because the target was announced on Thursday, the inoculation goal was actually nine days from the governor’s press conference on Friday.

Despite California having received more than 2 million doses of the vaccine, as of the weekend, less than a third of eligible individuals have been inoculated, according to The Los Angeles Times. Newsom said efforts to distribute the treatment were “not good enough” and vowed to accept responsibility for the state’s failures moving forward.

“I would expect — and you should expect — that we are going to see a substantially higher number of vaccines administered in the coming days and coming weeks,” he said.

“Hold me accountable.”

Newsom also revealed his plans to commit $372 million to the disbursement of the life-saving jab. Most of those funds would go toward a new vaccine management system, intended to disperse supplies as well and develop an educational campaign, which could launch as soon as next week.

As of Saturday, more than 2.6 million people across California have been sickened with coronavirus, including more than 29,000 who have died. Several major cities, including Los Angeles, have been battling back a spike of infections in recent weeks, prompting tight safety restrictions and guidelines.
