🌱 Gov. Hogan Calls For Gas Tax Suspension + Beltway Car Crash

Good day, neighbors! Alexis Goring here with the Monday issue of the Laurel Daily.

First, today's weather:

Partly sunny and warmer. High: 59 Low: 36.

Here are the top three stories in Laurel today:

  1. A multi-vehicle crash happened on the Inner Loop of the Beltway at Landover Road in Prince George's County on Sunday, resulting in two people being sent to the hospital with serious injuries. A pedestrian was injured. Due to this accident, all lanes of the Beltway were closed near the crash for over two hours. (WTOP)

  2. After the Board of Revenue Estimates reported an increase in Maryland's record budget surplus, Governor Larry Hogan issued a statement. "People across the country are being squeezed by surging inflation on everything from gas to groceriesMarylanders, especially our retirees, deserve and need this relief...we are working with our legislative partners on an emergency suspension of the gas tax to help with the pain at the pump...I have called on the Biden administration to increase domestic energy production to help lower costs,” he said. (Maryland.gov)

  3. Last Fall, Paige Blake, a junior biology major at Bowie State University, participated in the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Scholars Program recognized for their academic achievements, entrepreneurship, and campus leadership. This honor carries extraordinary significance for Blake because she is following in her mother’s footsteps. “To my knowledge, this is the first time that a mother and daughter from any HBCU have been named White House Scholars,” said Elyse Jones, HBCU Scholars Program Coordinator in the U.S. Department of Education.
