Gov. Kristi Noem declares disaster in counties impacted by December storms

Gov. Kristi Noem signed an executive order declaring a disaster in counties impacted by severe winter weather storms in December.

Those counties include, Bennett, Brookings, Clark, Day, Deuel, Hamlin, Jackson, Jones, Kingsbury, Mellette, Oglala Lakota, Potter, Roberts, Stanley, Todd and Tripp. An estimated $2.4 million in qualifying costs were reported as part of damage from the storms.

The order states federal resources are needed to help with the impacts of the storm for state, tribal and local governments. The executive order Noem signed is part of a request for public assistance and a presidential disaster declaration.

In December, much of the state saw hazardous road conditions, road closures, damages to power infrastructure and costs for snow removal. The disaster order will last for three months.
