The state of Connecticut is distributing about $125 million in CARES Act funding to nonprofits serving vulnerable residents during the COVID-19 pandemic, Gov. Ned Lamont said during a press conference at the Goodwill Bridgeport store and donation center Monday morning.

“We need Goodwill more than ever right now as we go into the ninth month of our COVID crisis and the number of people that are vulnerable, the number of people that are unemployed, their needs are just accelerating,” Lamont said.

Of about $125 million in support for Connecticut nonprofits through the CARES Act, most of which has been distributed, much of it has gone toward residential services and combat pay for frontline workers, he said.

Goodwill will receive hundreds of thousands of dollars to support its programming, said Jeffrey Wieser, the president & CEO of the Goodwill of Western and Northern Connecticut. Wieser said that the funds would primarily be used to support day programs at Goodwill that provide care for people with disabilities.

“It’s been a great relief to us in keeping our programs up and going during the past nine months,” he said.

Rep. Steve Stafstrom (D-Bridgeport) praised Goodwill for providing workforce training programs to residents of Bridgeport.

“Goodwill, folks know it predominantly from its stores and donation centers, but what folks need to understand is that funding from those stores, as well as other fundraising sources, lead to so many positive impacts in that community, and lead to the ability to provide the workforce training and job training that’s going on in this building,” Stafstrom said.

Lamont said that Connecticut’s CARES Act funding will likely be expended in the next month and criticized Congress for “fiddle-faddling” on approving further support for states.

“What we did today and what we’ve done with our CARES Act money is say look, we’re keeping faith,” he said.
