Gov. Ron DeSantis ends Florida ban on evictions. But they still can’t happen
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis allowed the statewide moratorium on evictions and foreclosures to expire at 12:01 a.m. Thursday.
The reason: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention enacted a nationwide order that provides eviction relief for renters who prove that they have not been able to pay because of COVID-19.
The state said in a news release Wednesday that DeSantis did not extend Florida’s moratorium “to avoid any confusion over whether the CDC’s evictions order should apply in a particular circumstance.”
The CDC’s evictions order expires Dec. 31.
Florida’s ban has been in place since DeSantis issued Executive Order 20-211 in April. DeSantis extended the order five times. In August, he amended the order to allow landlords and banks to begin the court process for evictions.
In Miami-Dade, evictions are not being executed because of a county COVID-19 emergency order. The county is offering help through its Emergency Rental Assistance Program.
In an effort to ensure the limited evictions I directed today are handled correctly, I'm issuing a temporary stop order to this directive in order review the policy. I've directed the @MiamiDadePD to maintain the current eviction moratorium until the review is completed. (1/3)
