DeSantis' tale of two sex accusations

Let me see if I understand this: Gov. Ron DeSantis just urged Christian Ziegler, the head of the Florida GOP, to step down amid a sexual assault allegation. It seems that Ziegler and his wife, Bridget, founder of the ultraconservative Moms for Liberty, were to be part of a ménage à trois that went awry. DeSantis and others wasted no time in decrying Mr. Ziegler’s behavior but he was silent in the wake of Donald Trump’s bragging about assaulting women, and his sexual assault lawsuit. DeSantis is the undisputed king of Florida, who is free to do whatever he wants here. But when he leaves the friendly confines of the Sunshine State, he’s afraid to go after the man he wants to replace.

FDLE debacle reeks of autocracy

Kudos to the Post for publishing its article on the firing of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement deputy chief of staff and forced resignation of its chief of staff. The heavy hand of Gov. Ron DeSantis and his minions lashing out at state employees at FDLE for attempting to comply with lawfully sought records, requests for flights taken by DeSantis and FDLE staff accompanying him by The Washington Post, merits page-one coverage. This piece shows us exactly how autocrats and their loyal lapdog conspirators heavy-handedly operate to block public disclosure of day-to-day activities undertaken by these senior public officials at public expense. Is this the kind of government Florida citizens want and deserve?

War doesn't come with warnings

Regarding the legitimate concern for civilian casualties in Gaza, this is the inevitable result of war. Millions of innocent German and Japanese civilians, as well as many others were killed during World War II, and no leaflets were dropped on Nagasaki or Dresden warning the people to get out. War is Hell.

Recycling needs to continue

I, too, share the anguish and frustration of the Dec. 3 letter, “What’s the Point of Recycling?" over recycling and the lack of an after-market for our trash. However, that’s still no reason to stop. Even if only 1 out of 100 plastic bottles is re-purposed into playground equipment, that’s something. There are other ways we can continue to make a difference by consciously making choices to live without single-use plastics. Start small by avoiding plastic straws, using your own grocery bags and stop buying washing machine detergent in plastic bottles. If we vote with our wallets and each of us makes one small change, think of what we can accomplish.
