Gov. Stitt steps in after Oklahoma couple detained in Turks and Caicos

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — An Oklahoma man is out of jail in Turks and Caicos, but his legal battle is far from over.

Ryan and Valerie Watson were on the islands for a birthday trip earlier this month.

As the Watson’s were about to fly home, airport security stopped them after they say ammo was found in one of Ryan’s carry-on bags.

This is a serious crime in Turks and Caicos and carries a possible 12 year prison sentence if convicted.

Ryan Watson called it a “bonehead mistake.” He was granted bail Wednesday but is being forced to remain in Turks and Caicos away from his wife and children. It’s not clear when he will be able to return home.

Valerie was released April 22 and her charges were dropped, after being detained for 11 days on the island. She returned home to Oklahoma City on Tuesday. McIntyre Law Chopper 4 captured the moments her plane touched down at Will Rogers World Airport. Inside the airport, her two children, loved ones and friends waited for her. They were emotional as she walked out of the terminal.

Gov. Kevin Stitt wrote a letter on behalf of the family. He vouches for their character and high morals.

Ryan was granted bail earlier this week but he cannot leave the islands.

His next court date isn’t scheduled until June 7.
