- Governor Tim Walz and former Governor Tim Pawlenty are teaming up to promote COVID-19 vaccines. Their joint effort comes on the day that anyone 16 or older in Minnesota is eligible for the vaccine. As WCCO's Caroline Cummings reports, the pair got their shots together to build public trust.

CAROLINE CUMMINGS: Minnesota governors past and present in a bipartisan show of force rolled up their sleeves Tuesday, and got a shot of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine side by side. On the very day any Minnesotan 16 plus is eligible, Governor Tim Walz and former Republican Governor Tim Pawlenty are urging people to get their vaccines as soon as they can.

TIM WALZ: Whatever vaccine is available, when your time comes up, that's the best vaccine.

CAROLINE CUMMINGS: Right now, demand still exceeds supply, even with the state's share of doses on the rise, and more people getting vaccinated. But state health officials say there will come a time when they have more vaccine than people who want it, and in the race to beat the variant, the state will have to overcome the obstacle of vaccine hesitancy.

TIM PAWLENTY: This is not a political issue in any manner. These vaccines are safe.

CAROLINE CUMMINGS: A recent CBS News poll found more Republicans than Democrats are reluctant to get a vaccine, just 47% said they will or already did, compared to 71% of Democrats and 51% of independents. Pawlenty, a Republican, acknowledged this Tuesday.

TIM PAWLENTY: I want to underscore and emphasize and underline and highlight the fact that these vaccines, by every known evidence that we have, across the globe, certified by authorities in the private and public sector, non-profit sector, all say the same thing. These vaccines are safe and incredibly helpful, and everyone should get them.
