Donald Trump will meet members of Congress for lunch at the White House as the partial US government shutdown enters a 25th day amid a standoff over his request for border wall funding.

It is believed that moderate Democrats are invited to the lunch, which comes as Mr Trump’s attorney general nominee, William Barr, faces questions from the Senate as part of his confirmation hearing.

Mr Barr will have to navigate his confirmation hearing skillfully, emphasising his support for the president’s hardline immigration policies while assuring Democrats he will not interfere with special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation.
