Governor-elect Josh Shapiro kicks off weekend of service in Pittsburgh before inauguration day

Governor-elect Josh Shapiro will be sworn into office Tuesday. Saturday, he was at the YWCA in Homewood kicking off a weekend of service leading up to the inauguration.
Shapiro told Channel 11 he ran on serving Pennsylvania’s forgotten communities and wants this weekend to reflect that promise.
“We wanted to come here today to partner with the various organizations, the great companies to try to make sure we help those who are less fortunate get the help they need,” Shapiro said.
Joined by Lt. Governor-elect Austin Davis and the future first and second ladies of Pennsylvania, Shapiro helped collect and pass out school supplies for local classrooms. He also helped put together care kits for the homeless.
“Josh and I are fighting to create a Pennsylvania that works for everyone. One that lifts everyone up and leaves no one behind,” Davis said.
We asked the governor-elect about the significance of choosing a spot like Homewood.
“This is a community that has needs and this is a community on the rise. It’s an example of what Austin Davis and I talked about every day of the campaign. We were not going to forget communities that too oftentimes got left behind,” Shapiro said.
The choice meant a lot to locals like MANN-E, who says it’s good to see attention in Homewood for something positive.
“I’m from Homewood, born and raised, and there’s a lot of love and a lot of positivity here. It’s just not always displayed,” MANN-E said. “I think it’s a beautiful thing.”
Shapiro and his team have events scheduled across the commonwealth over the next couple of days. He’ll take the oath of office on Tuesday.
