Grace Community to host True Girl Crazy Hair Tour for tweens, moms

FREMONT - Grace Community Church is hosting the national True Girl Crazy Hair Tour, an evening of music, fashion and fun for moms and their tween daughters on Saturday.

The event provides an opportunity for moms to spend one-on-one time with their daughters while they hear biblical teaching that can help equip tween girls to face the upcoming challenges of the teen years.

The event is geared toward tweens ages 7 to 12 and their mothers. The public is welcome.

Dana Hudson and her daughter, Ruthie, will have the chance to have one-on-one time at the Crazy Hair Tour at Grace Community Church on Saturday, Oct. 14.

“It’s designed to bring moms and their tween daughters together to have an opportunity to spend quality time together,” said Amy Richter, Grace’s director of children’s ministry. “It’s a very fun event. There will be fashion shows, live music and biblical teaching. There will be lots of excitement and energy and great bonding time.”

A unique element of the event is the opportunity for moms to talk one-on-one with their daughters about some of the issues the speakers will address, such as peer pressure and body image.

In a crazy world, tweens need support

“They’ll give moms and daughters conversation time. That can open the dialogue so girls will know they can turn to mom about things they hear and see,” Richter said. “Today’s world is very crazy, very busy. There’s a lot thrown at our tween daughters. This allows them to hear God’s Word together and overthrow the lies culture is telling them.”

Sarah Scruggs attended a True Girl event with her daughter, Ava Scruggs, last year. The event had an impact on her daughter and on their relationship.

“It was a great opportunity to connect with her. It lets me slow down life and have one-on-one time with her. We needed that time,” Sarah said. “It was perfect timing for her. It hit some areas I know are coming soon, like how you look at your body.”

The Crazy Hair Tour will open the door for conversations about tough teen issues for Amanda Chaney, center, and her daughters Elise Chaney, left, and Amelia Chaney.

Speakers encourage girls to develop their own style

The speakers encourage the girls to have a strong body image and develop their own clothing style without comparing themselves to the girls around them.

“It really made her think,” Sarah said. “We talked about it on the way home, so it created something that lasted much longer than the actual event.”

Although the teaching and encouragement were beneficial for Ava, the time to connect with her mother had just as much impact.

“It made her feel special. She was just with mom, it was fun, and the event was just for girls,” Sarah said. “It was a great opportunity, when the world is so fast-paced, to say I can make this commitment to my daughter to spend time with her. It was worth it.”
