Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. All Myrtle Beach city offices, buildings, and departments will be closed Saturday, except for emergency departments. The Grand Dunes bridge will be closed due to icy conditions as well. It is not clear when the bridge will reopen. (WBTW) A list of weekend closures in nearby areas of North Myrtle Beach, Loris, Conway, and other locations is provided here by MyHorryNews, and includes community centers, libraries, parks, and more. (MyHorryNews.com) For more widespread region-wide closures, check out this list from ABC15. (WPDE)

  2. News and weather reporters want to make sure people all along the Grand Strand are prepared for the aftermath of the storm. In case of ongoing power outages, they want folks to know not to use grills or generators indoors — that includes garages — and be mindful of the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning. There could be fallen trees or limbs, and live power lines. Walking can be treacherous, especially on steps, walkways, and patios because a covering of ice may be difficult to see. Travel may remain hazardous, with bridges and overpasses freezing before main roadways, and possible trees across roads. (WMBF)

  3. SCDHEC updated its official guidance for unvaccinated teachers who have been exposed to COVID-19 on Monday, but Horry County Schools will stick with a procedure already in place for the district: quarantine for five days and return to work if no symptoms are present after quarantine. DHEC's new guidelines allow unvaccinated teachers who've been exposed and have no symptoms to skip quarantine altogether, return to work, and wear a mask for 10 days. The new directive was designed to help with extreme staffing challenges throughout SC. HCS says too many rapid changes are causing confusion, and its plan is safer. (Myhorrynews)

  4. The one and only Larry Gatlin of the legendary country act, the Gatlin Brothers, is performing Monday night, January 24th, at the Alabama Theatre. The concert is a fundraiser sponsored by Waccamaw Community Foundation. Proceeds will go to the Pardue "Children In Need" Fund, as well as Help4Kids. Tickets can be purchased online. The show starts at 7:00 p.m. (WMBF)

  5. Thanks to a nearly half-million dollar grant from the County Transportation Fund, crews will begin giving the intersection at Mr. Joe White Avenue and Kings Highway a facelift. The construction will take approximately two months. Upon completion there will be improved crosswalks, ADA-compliant ramps, an upgrade to traffic signaling, and repaving. (WBTW)

That's it for Saturday, everybody! I'll see you Sunday for another Myrtle Beach Daily.

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
