Grand Forks Red River's Logan Arason wins state discus title

May 28—BISMARCK — Grand Forks Red River's Logan Arason wasn't always a discus natural.

Javelin has typically been his strength. An injury last season, however, changed his course.

Throwing the discus didn't bother his elbow as much as other throwing motions, so the junior dug into the craft.

On Friday, those efforts paid off in the form of a dominant state championship performance.

Arason's best discus throw of 170 feet, 7 inches won the North Dakota Class A state title by besting the field by more than 12 feet.

"I really haven't been able to practice a lot with all of the rain, so it felt great today," Arason said. "I'm happy with how I competed on all four throws. I didn't scratch one."

The second-best throw of the event went to Ethan Manock, who had a best toss of 158-2.

Arason finished ninth last year in the discus.

"My injury created a little love for disc and the feeling of flying through the ring and perfecting something you work on for a long time," Arason said. "I learned a lot about what I was supposed to do and this year has been about performing and being comfortable doing it."

Arason will also be the favorite in the javelin, which begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

"I've been feeling good," he said. "I haven't had a lot of practice this spring but I had some good practices this week and feel like it's going to be a good day (Saturday)."

In other Grand Forks action at the state meet Friday, Central's Quinn Roehl took fifth in the mile.

On the girls' side, Red River's Lauryn Rydell took third — one spot better than last season — in the high jump with a leap of 5-2. Her teammate Ella Weippert took fourth in the javelin. Red River's Jocelyn Schiller also took fourth in the mile.

Two area Class B athletes won state titles on Friday. Hillsboro-Central Valley's Parker Gallagher, the favorite in the pole vault, won the event with a mark of 13 feet. Brynley Coleman of Hatton-Northwood won the girls pole vault with a mark of 10-3.
