Grand Forks region's fall activities offer array of options to get out and enjoy festivities, fun

Sep. 2—GRAND FORKS — Whether you're into music, parades, farmers markets, church dinners, craft shows, vintage cars or car races, September is sure to offer something satisfying as summer gives way to autumn.

The Herald's calendar of events is jam-packed with activities in September and October for every age group. (Need proof? See below.) It's a busy season in this region, as fall brings a little more structure to daily routines and overriding COVID worries seem to have receded.

This time of year is made for savoring the joy of being outside.

Those who like to join an organized run or walk for a good cause will find several opportunities to lace up in the weeks to come, as sponsors link these outings with high-profile community events — such as the Greenway Takeover Festival and Potato Week.

The Stump Lake Village Threshing Bee, located 12 miles south of Lakota, North Dakota, may be the place "to bee" Sunday and Monday, Sept. 4-5. Countless activities will celebrate the area's agricultural heritage, with a thresherman's breakfast and demonstrations of the spinning wheel, handcrafted brooms, lefse-making, rope-making and butter-churning. Live music, a parade, petting zoo, an old-time photo studio and a huge craft show. Magician-comedian Jeffrey Salveson will perform at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The much-anticipated Potato Bowl Week gets under way next week, with a plethora of fun events, including the World's Largest French Fry Feed, races, fireworks display, a parade and, of course, UND's big football match-up against the University of Northern Iowa.

The weather is very often appealing this time of year, so why not explore Nelson's Pumpkin Patch near Emerado, North Dakota, or the Valley Corn Maize southwest of East Grand Forks?

Outdoors is also conducive for checking out vintage vehicles on display weekly on Northern Cruz Club Cruz Night at Culver's restaurant and the Prime Steel Car Club Cruise Night at LaCantina, formerly the El Roco. Proceeds from the annual Rydell Car and Bike Show, set for Sept. 18, will benefit St. Joseph's Social Care this year.

Bring a healthy appetite — you'll need it — to the annual fall dinner Sept. 12 at St. Jude's Catholic Church in Thompson, North Dakota.

Broadway's Tony Award-winning musical "Hairspray" hits the stage Sept. 17 and the Jerry Seinfeld performance promises to keep the audience in stitches Sept. 24, both at the Chester Fritz Auditorium.

Country music singer-songwriter Thomas Rhett stages his "Bring the Bar to You Tour" on Sept. 29 at the Alerus Center.

Yes, September and October are shaping up to be a bonanza of fun, festive and interesting entertainment options for the whole family.

The only question will be: how to choose what to do.
