Grand Hotel’s iconic rocking chairs now for sale

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — You can now bring a small part of classic Michigan summers home to experience it all year long.

Mackinac Island’s Grand Hotel is selling its iconic wooden rocking chairs.

The chairs come in three colors: white, black and “natural.” The wood-stained chairs are listed at $599 while the painted chairs cost $699. They are billed as the “finest, best built weatherproof rocking chair available in the world.”

“Its size, seat and back height, contours and balance point make it the most comfortable rocking chair made. It will last through many years of use and happy memories,” the description reads.

Everything you need to know about the Grand Hotel

The chairs are manufactured with kiln-dried robinia wood and are cut to shape. They weigh 37 pounds but can hold up to 300 pounds.

Every summer, dozens of rocking chairs line the Grand Hotel’s front porch — the 660-foot deck that is considered the largest in the world.

The Grand Hotel was built by Allegan native Charles Caskey and a group of 600 laborers, erecting all four floors and rooms to hold 600 guests in just 93 days. The Grand Hotel opened in July of 1887 and will celebrate its 137th summer welcoming guests on the island later this year.
