A Franklin County grand jury returned murder and robbery charges against a man accused in the Jan. 2021 shooting outside of a Sunoco on the city's Northeast Side that left one man dead.

Dontrell Jaynes, 23, of the Berwyn East neighborhood in Southeast Columbus, is accused of killing David Gaines, 62, of North Linden outside of a Sunoco gas station, Columbus Division of Police said in a press release.

Jaynes is charged with aggravated murder and aggravated robbery, and several firearms violations, according to court filings.

Jaynes is currently being held at the Ross Correctional Institution in Chillicothe serving a prison sentence for a separate crime.

On Jan. 6, 2021, at 3:18 a.m., Columbus police responded to a Sunoco gas station in the 1700 block of East Hudson Street near the intersection of Joyce Avenue on a report of a shooting.

Officers arrived and found Gaines suffering from a gunshot wound. Paramedics took Gaines to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries. Gaines' death marked the eighth homicide in Columbus in 2021.
