Grand National 2023 LIVE: Results, reaction and latest updates after dramatic day at Aintree

Corach Rambler won the 2023 Grand National at Aintree backing up its status as the 8/1 favourite.

Mister Coffey and Coko Beach led early on and throughout most of the thrilling race. But chaotic scenes early on saw a number of fallers, including Lifetime Ambition, who was taken out by a loose horse at fence 9.

However, Corach Rambler, ridden by Derek Fox and trained by Lucinda Russell took the lead from Mister Coffey over the final fence and kicked for home to record a memorable win.

The race had been delayed after protestors breached the Aintree racecourse fence and got on to the course. The Grand National attracted criticism from animal rights protestors in the build-up, with three arrests made in connection with potential co-ordinated disruption activities at Aintree, which became nine following the pre-race disruption

Who won the Grand National 2023?

18:45 , Mike Jones

Corach Rambler stormed to victory in the Randox Grand National to the delight of trainer Lucinda Russell and jockey Derek Fox.

Backing up success at last month’s Cheltenham Festival, the nine-year-old negotiated a chaotic race to validate its pre-race status as a 8-1 favourite.

The iconic race was delayed by around 15 minutes after protestors from Animal Rising got on to the track. Corach Rambler grabbed the lead over the last hurdle and then pulled away from a final test launched by Vanillier and Gaillard Du Mesnil, who finished second and third.

A brave effort from last year’s winner Noble Yeats, despite a big weight, secured an impressive fourth. It was a second victory in the world’s greatest steeplechase for Russell and Fox, after One For Arthur in 2017.

Grand National delayed after animal rights protestors breach Aintree course

19:08 , Mike Jones

The Grand National 2023 was delayed by over 15 minutes after animal rights protestors breached the steel fence surrounding the Aintree racecourse.

The delay to the race, which was due to start at 5:15pm and eventually begun after 5:30pm, forced jockeys to hold their horses in the paddock.

Six protestors from from Animal Rising breached the fence, with three reaching the track, while many more attempted to also jump over the fence surrounding the racecourse.

Police rushed to contain the protest, with clashes following as protestors attached themselves to the fence, while others could be seen exchanging ladders in a bid to help others join the protest inside the perimeter.

Grand National 2023: Hill Sixteen put down

18:37 , Mike Jones

There were a lot of fallen horses during this year’s Grand National and thankfully most of them are okay. Unfortunately Hill Sixteen who collided heavily with the first fence had injuries which were too severe and has been put down.

A Jockey Club spokesperson said: “Sadly, while racing in the Grand National, Hill Sixteen sustained an unrecoverable injury. Our sincere sympathies are with connections.

“Recite A Prayer and Cape Gentleman were assessed on course by our skilled veterinary staff and walked onto the horse ambulance for further assessment in the stables.”

Corach Rambler trainer Lucinda Russell, speaking to ITV Racing: “He just loved the fences. It is very personal this one. I will always remember One for Arthur, he was a brilliant horse, but this was very special.

“This is such an advert for syndicate ownership. It is fantastic, fairytale stuff. They have got themselves a very, very good horse.

“He is a very intelligent horse and when he jumped the last I just felt he would win.

“Derek Fox was very close to not making the ride. He had a terrible fall, hurt his shoulder again. I am so pleased he was on it because he knows Corach so well. He is a fabulous jockey.”

Corach Rambler stormed to victory in the 2023 Grand National at Aintree this afternoon to earn trainer Lucinda Russell another National winner and jockey Derek Fox his second triumphant in the World’s most famous horse race.

After a delay to the start of the race thanks to animal rights protestors attempting to infiltrate the course the Grand National got underway with punters estimated to have to spent around £250m on having a flutter.

Last year’s winner Noble Yeats became the the first seven-year-old horse to win in more than 80 years and put in a decent run to regain his title finishing fourth out of the 39 runners.

Two-time Cheltenham winner Corach Rambler was too strong though and Fox timed his move to perfection, leaping over the last of the 30 fences into first place before driving to the line ahead of Vanillier and Gaillard Du Mesnil.

Aintree is a huge race course. It’s a large space to cover for the Merseyside police and the security staff.

Sam Thomas, trainer of Our Power, says that the disruption isn’t ideal but shouldn’t affect the horse too much.

Jockey Davy Russell spoke earlier about his chances to win the Grand National again as he rides Galvin’s today:

“He’s a good horse. To be honest at the start of the year I would have said he was kind of coming to the end of his enthusiasm. I don’t know how he does it but [trainer] Gordon [Elliott] has reinvigorated him. He has it all back.

“The most enjoyable ride I had at Cheltenham this year was Galvin. He travelled everywhere, jumped fantastic.

“He is not a big horse, he is really quite small, so fits the criteria as we have a lot of weight to carry. It will be tough going, but he does like good ground, and with the ground drying out that will help him.”

The most famous event in British racing returns in 2023 with the Grand National set to be held for the 175th time at Aintree on Saturday.

First run in 1839, the steeplechase will see competing horses and jockeys clear 30 fences in the hopes of etching their names in history.

Noble Yeats took victory in 2022, becoming the first seven-year-old horse to win in more than 80 years, with punters eager to find the best bets this weekend.

40 runners are ready to tackle the four-and-a-bit mile course, with a trio of favourites heading the betting.

Here are the runners and current odds for the 2023 Grand National:

Delta Work can give trainer Gordon Elliott a record-equalling fourth victory in the Randox Grand National at Aintree.

George Dockeray, Fred Rimell and Ginger McCain currently share the honours as the leading handlers in the National Hunt highlight and Elliott has every chance of adding his name to the hall of fame.

Delta Work was beaten 22 lengths by Noble Yeats when third last year, but while that one has been hiked 15lb, the selection will actually carry 5lb less than 12 months ago after some mixed results in the interim.

There could be no arguing with the merit of his prep run though, following the same path as last year to fend off stablemate and reopposing rival Galvin in the cross-country chase at the Cheltenham Festival, with Delta Work keeping on well to win by two and a half lengths despite having a 7lb deficit on official ratings.

His stamina is still to be proven over this four-and-a-quarter-mile trip and clearly if ante-post favourite Corach Rambler takes to the course, the whole field will be up against it with a horse that is technically 10lb well in.

Corach Rambler’s come-from-behind style is also a risk in a 40-strong field and so Delta Work is the pick on the basis of his proven aptitude for the fences, which are the crucial part of this whole test.

Our Power could give him most to think about from the bottom of the handicap, while another Elliott runner in Coko Beach can make the frame and Noble Yeats cannot be ruled out back at the scene of his greatest hour.

17:15pm - Grand National 2023

Now there’s a 45 minute wait or so until the big one. The Grand National 2023 will set off at quarter-past five meaning there’s loads of time to get a final bet on if you’re so inclined.

Otherwise, get ready to enjoy the best race on the calender. This should be a belter as most of the horses are too close to call. There’s no outstanding talent like Tiger Roll and the joint favourites are all at 10/1.

Delta Work, Ain’t That A Shame, Corach Rambler and Gaillard Du Mesnil are all back to win this one.

“I have to ride like I was 21 again. You have to against these young lads, they are not easy to beat. You have to prepare the way they prepare or you get left behind.

“It is very special. It is a special place. I hope the people of Liverpool and England realise what they have here, you can’t get it anywhere else in the world.”

Winning jockey Harry Skelton, speaking to ITV Racing: “She has a lot in hand, good mare, good training. Hasn’t run for 90 days - she has won two big handicaps this year but that is down to the training.

“Dan leads, the team, he is a great leader but we have good people around us - good owners who have been patient and they have been rewarded.

“Unbelievable. Cheltenham is the Olympics but there is no place like this. Liverpool is unbelievable, the people of Liverpool make it all special. We will witness the greatest race there is later on and look at all the people here.”

Grand National 2023: Rachael Blackmore on Ain’t That A Shame’s chances in the National

14:43 , Mike Jones

More from jockey Rachael Blackmore who spoke to Betfair about her chances in the Grand National later on when she’ll be riding Ain’t That A Shame.

“Ain’t That A Shame has a lovely profile for the race. He was unlucky to be just beaten in the Munster National at Limerick in October, and it wasn’t my best day in the saddle when I finished fourth on him in the Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown over Christmas.

“But he won nicely at Gowran the last day, and it was no harm that the runner-up came out and won at Fairyhouse there at the weekend. You don’t really know how a horse will handle the track or the fences until you get out there, but he had a pop over the National fences at The Curragh, and he went well.

“I’d be confident that he will take to the fences fine.He travels well through his races, which is a big help. You’re just hoping that you can get into a nice position and find a nice racing rhythm over the first few fences. I am hopeful that he can.

“After that, you never know, it’s the Grand National, but he has his chance and I’m very much looking forward to it.”
