Grandmother wants justice nearly a year after 5-year-old’s death

HORN LAKE, Miss. — A grieving grandmother is looking for swift justice nearly a year after her grandson was killed in Horn Lake, Mississippi, and says the adult involved is walking free.

From birth to his first haircut, 5-year-old Jayden was loved.

“He was the sweetest child ever,” said his grandmother, Shaquatti E. James-Boyd. “In his obituary, we wrote, ‘He never met a stranger.'”

In front of his preschool cap and gown, Jayden’s grandma struggles knowing he’s no longer here. Boyd says Jayden was shot and killed last April.

His mother’s boyfriend, Anthony White, is now charged with manslaughter – culpable negligence in the case. Boyd said White’s young son somehow pulled the trigger.

“He was left in his truck at his job in Horn Lake at LL Flooring with his 6-year-old and a loaded gun. The 6-year-old got the gun and shot him in the face,” Boyd said.

We went to Horn Lake Police for answers. They said White was arrested last June with a $50,000 bond. In September, he bonded out.

“It’s just hard knowing we may have to come to the conclusion that he may not get any time, he may not get anything,” Boyd said.

A trial has not been set. Horn Lake Police said another part of the hold-up in this case is that White’s previous attorney is now the DeSoto County District Attorney. Because of that conflict, the Tate County District Attorney is looking into the case.

Boyd is hoping for a trial date soon.

“I need justice for Jayden,” she said.
