Granite Falls residents reliant on mail concerned after USPS stops delivery

Some Caldwell County residents have questions for the U.S. Postal Service after it stopped delivering mail to more than a dozen homes.

They said they got letters from their postmaster warning that their mail service would end if they didn’t make repairs to their road.

One woman was so distraught over the news, she says she had six tons of gravel delivered to her home and then filled some of the potholes along Poovey Drive.

The residents here are hoping USPS reconsiders its decision.

Barbara Riley says she relies on the mail to get medication for her family members.

She shared a letter the postal service sent which says in part “the road is poorly maintained and presents a hazard for continued mail delivery.”

Because the road is not state maintained, the postmaster suggests moving all the mailboxes to Highway 321-A but some elderly residents told us they can’t walk that far and 321-A is too dangerous.

Others say they are spending nearly two hundred dollars now to rent a post office box miles away in Granite Falls.

The residents here are hoping the U-S Postal Service reconsiders its decision.

We’ve already reached out to the postmaster here in Granite Falls who directed us to a contact in Charlotte about whether or not they’ll reinspect the road here.

We are hoping to hear back later today.
