Graniteville man dies by suicide after killing his mother

A home in Graniteville was the site of a murder-suicide on Friday.

Aiken County sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the 500 block of Rennie Street at 4:42 p.m. after a caller reporting finding his mother and brother dead from gunshot wounds inside the home, according to a news release from Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables.

The investigation determined that Joe James, 68, had shot his mother then shot himself.

The 86-year-old mother, Betty James, will be autopsied in Newberry, while no autopsy is scheduled for the shooter. The coroner's office and the Aiken County Sheriff's Office are continuing with the investigation.
