Grant funding approved to help repair breakwater dock at St. Augustine Municipal Marina
Hurricanes Ian and Nicole left behind plenty of damage throughout the area. One structure that didn’t escape harm was the St. Augustine Municipal Marina breakwater dock.

The St. Augustine Municipal Marina has received grant funding approval. The Florida Inland Navigation District will provide up to $500,000 for repair costs. The St. Augustine Port, Waterway and Beach District will also pitch in with an additional grant of $250,000.
Doing what it was designed to do, the breakwater dock has a site-specific design to provide important weather protection to the rest of the marina.

The protective dock reduces the power of incoming waves from the ocean and St. Augustine inlet. This helps minimize damage caused by the impact of these waves.
“The breakwater dock did its job by protecting the Marina from Hurricane Ian on Sept. 28, 2022,” said Eric Mauldin, the marina harbormaster. “Then, when Hurricane Nicole impacted us six weeks later, on Nov. 10, 2022, the breakwater dock sustained further damage. It is essential we repair it before the next hurricane season and are thankful for this funding opportunity, which allows us to do so.”

Plans are for repair work to be completed before the 2023 hurricane season. The City of St. Augustine will then apply for reimbursement funding from FEMA for repair costs, estimated to be around $2 million.
