Grants awarded to Tolland nonprofits

Jul. 13—TOLLAND — The Tolland Greater Together Community Fund has announced its inaugural grants to the following local organizations.

The Tolland Library Foundation was awarded $1,500 for the production of their project: A Tolland Oral History.

The Tolland Education Foundation was awarded $3,000 to add a First Lego League to Tolland Middle School.

The Autism and Law Enforcement Education Coalition, through the nonprofit Lifeworks, was awarded $1,500 to provide training to Tolland first responders about ways to best serve people with autism in a crisis situation.

The Lions Club of Tolland was awarded $5,000 to purchase an eye-screening machine for preschool to fifth grade students.

The Tolland Historical Society was awarded $5,000 to support restoration of the bell tower on the Old Tolland County Courthouse Museum, society programs, and an event at the Military Museum.

The Tolland Community Fund was initially provided $100,000 from the Hartford Foundation to support the needs of Tolland residents.

Half of the funds were immediately available for grant awards, while the other half of the funds were endowed, according to an advisory committee that consists of several Tolland residents.
