Grantsville City Cemetery headstones to be repaired, vandals identified

GRANTSVILLE, Utah (ABC4) — Grantsville City Mayor Neil Critchlow and the city’s Public Works Department said they are optimistic the 17 headstones damaged in a recent vandalism incident can be repaired this spring.

Critchlow was notified about the cemetery damage in mid-February, telling ABC4 he was in disbelief and disappointed in what he saw.

“This is a tragic thing. This is our ancestors. This is our, you know, the people who built Grantsville,” Critchlow told ABC4 after the incident. “We want to make sure that the respect is being shown towards them.”

In an update, Critchlow and the Grantsville City Public Works Department said they have been working closely with the Cemetery Program Manager from the State Historic Preservation Office. Together, they were able to assess the extent of the damage and formulate a plan to repair the headstones.

While some of the repairs will have to wait for the weather to calm down and warm up, the Public Works Department is optimistic the headstones can be repaired by Memorial Day, May 27.

An investigation into the vandalism is still ongoing, however, detectives with the Grantsville City Police Department said they have identified those responsible. While they did not publicly disclose the identities of the suspects, they expressed their gratitude to the public for their help in bringing the vandals to justice.

“Investigators will continue to work with the victims and their families to ensure all aspects of these crimes are accounted for and again thank the community for their support of the police department’s endeavors,” said GCPD.

Police are still asking the public for any additional information regarding the vandalism. Anyone who may have more info or own any property damaged in the vandalism but hasn’t spoken to detectives, they are asked to call Grantsville City Police at (435) 882-5600.

No further details regarding the investigation or the case have been released at this time.
