Grantsville Community Museum sponsors annual open house

GRANTSVILLE, MD ― The Grantsville Community Museum, 153 Main St., Grantsville, Maryland, will have an open house from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 14.

The museum is located in the former First State Bank building, which also housed the Grantsville branch of the Ruth Enlow Library until the new library building was built. Joanna Miller will be available to sign copies of her book about the Casselman Hotel. There will be refreshments.

A drawing will be held where the winner will win a framed portrait of the Casselman Bridge. The drawing will be held at the end of the open house. It is a photograph showing all the splendor of the area, capturing the Casselman River at the beginning of fall and the bridge bathed in sunlight. The photograph is matted in a 16 X 20 white painted frame.

There will also be a second drawing for a copy of “Postcards of Garrett County.” All the proceeds of the drawing go to the museum.

Joanna Miller writes about hotel

A lifelong resident of Garrett County, Joanna Miller was born and raised near Grantsville. Her farm home was once a part of the Cornucopia tract where the Casselman Hotel was built 100 years earlier. After graduation from Hood College, she moved into the hotel, which her parents had recently purchased from Joseph and Wilda (Getty) Fahey.

Miller taught for 30 years in Garrett County – three years at Yoder School and 27 years at Northern High School, the two schools she had attended in her youth. For 42 years, including the span of her teaching career, the historic inn was her home. Captivated by the charm and history of the place, she has recorded the years of her family’s ownership of the Casselman Hotel. Her book, "The Casselman Hotel, 1842-2017," published by Masthof Press of Morgantown, Pennsylvania, also includes historical sketches and stories from earlier years.

This will be the last day the museum is open until next May. Visitors can tour the museum after hours by calling 301-707-7200 to set up an appointment.
