Granville, Newark Catholic ranked in AP football poll

COLUMBUS — Two Licking County football teams have been ranked among the state’s elite.

Granville in Division III and Newark Catholic in Division VII each were ranked in the top 10 of the first Associated Press state poll released Monday.

The 3-0 Blue Aces are ranked No. 6 after having beaten Whitehall, 18-7, Clear Fork, 16-8, and Johnstown, 38-16, so far. The defending Region 11 champions will be tested again Friday with a trip to Heath.

NC is ranked No. 4 despite having played just one game, a 45-0 victory against Nelsonville-York, because of two cancellations. The Green Wave, which received five first-place votes and are the two-time defending Region 27 champions, have a challenge ahead, visiting Fort Loramie on Friday.

Lakewood St. Edward in Division I, Cincinnati Winton Woods in II, Chardon in III, Cleveland Glenville in IV, Ironton in V, Marion Local in VI, which moved up after beating NC in last year's state final, and Mechanicsburg in VII are the state’s top-ranked teams.
