Graphic abortion images headed to Rockford streets. Here's where they'll be

An anti-abortion group plans on sending members to Rockford on Wednesday to participate in a series of protests aimed at raising awareness to abortion services returning to the area.

Here's what you need to know.

What is the group?

The Aurora-based Pro-Life Action League is partnering with the Rockford Family Initiative on the daylong event.

What will the groups be doing?

According to the groups, protesters plan on displaying "large signs showing the violent reality of abortion at various stages of development — juxtaposed with the beautiful reality of life in the womb — at three busy intersections throughout the City of Rockford."

Where will they be?

The Pro-Life Action League and Rockford Family Initiative will visit three sites Wednesday:

  • 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. — North Perryville Road and East State Street

  • 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. — Mulford Road and Riverside Boulevard

  • 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. — East State Street and North Alpine Road

What are they protesting?

According to the Pro-Life Action League, the anti-abortion groups are upset Rockford has become an "abortion destination" and is outraged that Wisconsin Dr. Dennis Christensen opened an abortion clinic in Rockford earlier this year.

Where is the abortion clinic in Rockford?

The Rockford Family Planning Center, 611 Auburn St.

What does the Rockford clinic offer?

The facility offers pregnancy dating and confirmation, pregnancy counseling, first-trimester abortion medication, referrals for a second trimester surgical abortion and referrals for prenatal care if desired, according to its website at rfd-familyplanning.com.

Is the first time these groups have done something like this?

No, Wednesday's event is part of the third annual Joseph M. Scheidler Memorial “Face the Truth” Tour where the anti-abortion group travels to different cities across the Chicagoland area to spread its message.

Why the graphic images?

The images the groups plan to display throughout the Rockford area "are intended to open hearts and minds," Eric Scheidler, executive director of the Pro-Life Action League, said in a news release. “Rockford citizens need to see the truth about what’s happening behind those doors over on Auburn Street. ... Every abortion violently ends the life of an innocent unborn child — and our display makes that impossible to deny.”
