Great Bend paver lands $32 million in state overlay projects

A Great Bend contractor has been awarded nine paving projects in south-central and southwest Kansas worth more than $32.3 million from the Kansas Department of Transportation’s October bid opening.

Venture Corporation of Great Bend won all but one paving project on the Oct. 20 bid list for a cumulative 153 miles of highway in seven counties.

APAC-Kansas Inc. Shears Division in Hutchinson won the other mill and overlay project in Ellsworth County. A Liberal company also was awarded an asphalt bonding project in Seward County.

The projects awarded to Venture Corporation, all asphalt mill and overlays, included:

Barton: 30.7 miles of K-4, from the Rush County line to the Rice County line, including five miles of U.S. 281 between the east and west K-4 junctions, $6.43 million; and 8.1 miles of U.S. 56, from the east city limits of Great Bend east to the west city limits of Ellinwood, $1.569 million;

Hamilton: 11.3 miles of U.S. 50 from the east city limits of Syracuse to the Kearny County line, $2.391 million; and 17.2 miles from the east city limits of Syracuse to the Colorado line, $2.897 million;

Kearny: 15 miles of U.S. 50, from the Hamilton County line east to the west city limits of Lakin, $3.193 million;

Lane: 12.3 miles of K‑4, from the east K‑23 east to the Ness County line, $2.113 million;

Meade: 15.4 miles of U.S. 54, from the east city limits of Meade northeast to the Clark County line, $4.163 million; and

Ness: 19 miles of K‑4, from the Lane County line east to the U.S. 283 junction, $3.233 million;

Pratt: 24.1 miles including U.S. 281, from the Barber County line north to just north of N.W. 60th Street excluding the City of Pratt; U.S. 54, from the K‑61/U.S. 54 junction east 4.04 miles to S.E. 25th Avenue; and K‑61, from the U.S. 54/K‑61 junction north about 0.7 of a mile to Maple Street at the 2-lane/4-lane transition, $6.383 million.

Other projects awarded included:

Ellsworth: Mill and overlay 14.8 miles of K‑14, from the Rice County line north to the south city limits of Ellsworth, APAC-Kansas Inc. Shears Division, Hutchinson, $3.192 million;

Sedgwick: repair of two bridges, including the bridge on K‑96 over Little Slough Creek located 0.61 of a mile east of Tyler Road; and bridge #286, over Ridge Road located at the K‑96/Ridge Road junction, PCI Roads LLC, Saint Michael, Minnesota, $506,018;

Seward: Apply 8 miles of ultra-thin bonded asphalt surfacing on U.S. 83, beginning at the U.S. 160 junction north to the Haskell county line, J & R Sand Company Inc., Liberal, $1.114 million.

An additional project awarded from the Sept. 22 bid letting was bridge replacements in Gray, Clark and Meade counties to Bridges Inc., Newton, for $8.496 million.
