Great Dane with a heart ‘as big as her stature’ needs a new home in Florida. Meet Suzy

A Great Dane with a heart “as big as her stature” was rescued — and now, she needs a home.

Suzy the 6-year-old dog is ready for a second chance after she was found “starving and sick” in her former owner’s backyard, the Northwest Florida Great Dane Rescue wrote on social media and in an email to McClatchy News.

“With energy that defies her age, Suzy is ready for adventures and long walks with her forever family,” the rescue wrote March 19 on Facebook.

The “resilient” dog came to the rescue in October as she and several other pups reportedly were taken from a home due to neglect.

“Suzy’s journey began with a family who unfortunately couldn’t provide her with the care, food, and attention she deserved,” the rescue wrote. “Left to live outside, Suzy quickly mastered the art of escapades and became somewhat of a legend in the community for escaping the backyard to roam a busy highway intersection in Pensacola.”

Even though Suzy has left the dangers of that intersection in the Florida Panhandle, the animal organization wants her new owner to have a home with a fence.

“Her escapades have taught us that she requires a fenced yard and cannot be left unattended, as her Houdini-like skills may lead her to explore beyond the confines of safety,” the rescue wrote.

Suzy is picky about other dogs that she spends time with, so she has been living at a boarding facility. She is described in an online adoption profile as a friendly pet with boundless “resilience and affection.”

“Once she forms a bond of trust, she transforms into a cuddle enthusiast, eager to shower her chosen humans with affection and devotion,” the animal organization wrote, adding that she “loves doing zoomies around her people when she’s excited.”

Suzy also is known for having a heart “as big as her stature.” She is roughly 120 or 130 pounds, and female Great Danes can weigh up to 140 pounds, according to the American Kennel Cub.

As of March 20, Suzy was still in need of a new owner. More information about the rescue’s adoption process can be found at nwflgdr.com.
