Filming ended in July 2021.

In early February, when The Great's cast and crew learned of their multiple Golden Globe nods for season one—including Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy, as well as nominations for Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult—they were in the midst of production on season two. At the time, they were a couple months into filming, and showrunner Tony McNamara had written the scripts through episode six, according to the Wrap.

(McNamara has previously spoken about purposely finalizing his scripts late, preferring to see how the season is playing out on set and in early cuts before setting the plot in stone. "I want to cut episodes, and I want to edit episodes and watch who's playing well with who and what the dynamics are and what kind of stuff's landing really well and then sort of react to that," he told Collider of writing season one.)

Then, on July 19, Elle Fanning posted a photo of herself and Hoult on Instagram, writing that the show officially finished filming for season two.

She wrote, "Season 2 of The Great has officially wrapped. Wow. What a tremendous feat filming in a global pandemic. I am eternally grateful for the crew that kept us all safe and going. This season is going to be WILLLLDDDD! I love them with all my heart. Cannot wait for you to see what we have cooked up!"

Gillian Anderson is joining the cast.

Season two introduces Joanna, Catherine's mother, who will be played by Gillian Anderson, per Deadline. T&C readers might recognize Anderson from her role as Margaret Thatcher in The Crown or as Dana Scully in The X Files.

“Joanna is a glamorous socialite from Germany, sometimes also known as the 'maestro of marriage' for her abilities to arrange high profile partnerships for her daughters,” according to Deadline. “She has heard rumors of her daughter’s coup and come to Russia to see it for herself. Though the apple of Catherine’s eye and a doting mother, it soon becomes clear Johanna has more sinister intentions to save her family’s reputation.”

Fans have gotten a few hints about what's to come.

In an interview with the Wrap, Fanning teased Catherine's more "parental" role in season two. "This season is very parental and learning to be a mother and mother to a country in that sense," she said. "There’s some themes there. But we have some wild things planned. It’s going to be cool."

The actress also told Deadline, “Catherine, I feel, has a real soft spot for [Peter], which gets to be explored. Their relationship gets way more twisted. So we have a lot working together.”

For his part, Hoult told the Hollywood Reporter, "It's really fun to watch how the characters develop. That's what's fun of watching Elle — I'm in awe of where she's taking Catherine."

Rewatch season one on Hulu.

Though we won't receive new episodes until the fall, in the meantime, season one is always available on Hulu for a re-watch.
