The Great's third season has been teased in a brand new trailer and it sees Peter (Nicholas Hoult) and Catherine (Elle Fanning) try couples therapy.

The loosely historical comedy-drama series follows Catherine the Great's rise to power after she travels to Russia to marry Peter III, becoming embroiled in a world full of beliefs and customs that she tries to change.

The second season of the show saw Catherine try to murder Peter after finding out he had slept with, and subsequently accidentally killed, her mother Joanna (Gillian Anderson). The trailer for the upcoming third instalment now teases the couple trying therapy to save their marriage.

"There was some bloodshed," Catherine says, as the pair sit next to each other.

"She tried to kill me," Peter responds. "I did," Catherine admits, before asking him: "How can we trust each other?"

A woman sitting opposite the pair tells them "faith", to which they both respond is an "annoying" answer in a rare moment of agreement.

The trailer sees crowds of people cheer for Catherine, while she states she will become the leader she "always promised [herself] she would be".

An uprising is seen building among the people of Russia, while Catherine juggles ruling the nation and working on her marriage with Peter through a number of probably not-so-historically correct means.

Maleficent's Elle Fanning will reprise her role as Catherine in the Emmy-winning series, alongside The Menu and Renfield star Nicholas Hoult as Peter.

Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Bayo Gbadamosi and Belinda Bromilow will also be reprising their roles.

An official synopsis from Hulu teases what is in store for fans in the upcoming season: "Season 3 of The Great sees Catherine and Peter attempt to make their marriage work after some seemingly insurmountable problems. Peter witnessed his own attempted murder at Catherine's hands and she also imprisoned all of his friends. On top of this, Peter is at a loose end playing First Husband to Catherine's reign, so he busies himself with fathering, hunting, and salty culinary ventures.

"But they're not enough to keep him contented as visions of his late father (played by Jason Isaacs) get in his head about his failures as Peter the Great's son. Catherine the Great starts making a name for herself beyond her borders and inspired by a visit from the US ambassador, sets up a conference where peasants, nobles, and merchants can all give their input on developing a new Russia. She learns that even the best political leaders sometimes need to make compromises in order to progress."

Additionally, Fanning and Hoult previously told Newsweek that season 3 will also focus on the couple raising their son Paul.

All 10 episodes of the third season of The Great premiere on May 12 on StarzPlay via Amazon Prime in the UK, and Hulu in the US.
