The executive chairman of Northeast Ohio accounting firm Bober Markey Fedorovich has been selected as the 2023 recipient of the H. Peter Burg Economic Development Leadership Award, the Greater Akron Chamber announced Tuesday.

Richard C. Fedorovich is the eighteenth recipient of the award; he will be honored March 15 at the Chamber's annual meeting at the John S. Knight Center.

"I appreciate the recognition by the past recipients and the Chamber — especially because of its connection to Pete Burg and his legacy of investing the time and attention of business leadership on behalf of the region," said Fedorovich. "I believe that being engaged and making an impact is a responsibility of every leader in our community to help shape Greater Akron today and more importantly, for the success of our region long-term."

The award was established in 2004 to recognize a leader who demonstrates commitment to economic and community development within Greater Akron. Burg, who went to work for Ohio Edison as a financial analyst in 1968 and rose through the ranks of the company that would become FirstEnergy. He was named FirstEnergy president and CEO In 1999 and died of complications from leukemia in 2004 at age 57, leaving a legacy of corporate leadership and extensive community involvement.

In a news release, the Chamber noted that Fedorovich has stimulated growth within many of the region's large and middle market businesses and has served in a variety of leadership roles, including the chair of the Akron Regional Development Board — the Chamber's predecessor. Bober Markey Federovich operates offices in Fairlawn and Cleveland.

"As the past recipients of this award considered individuals that have consistently worked both out front and behind the scenes on behalf of the region's success, Rick's consistent approach to engaging on issues and pushing for what he believes is the best path for our region was noted," said Steve Millard, Chamber president and CEO. "And, if you know Rick, you know he doesn't shy away from telling you what he thinks and pushing for what is right. Over time, he has been willing to put his time and investment into growth for our region's companies and its biggest opportunities."

Fedorovich joins a group of distinguished community leaders who've received the Burg Award. Last year's honoree was Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro; other recent recipients include Roger Read, S. Theresa Carter and the late Philip Maynard.

Akron's Red Cross chapter also presents an annual community award honoring Burg.
