Democrats scored a rare Ohio victory in Akron Tuesday as state Rep. Emilia Sykes won a new job in Congress representing the new 13th Congressional District.

Sykes, an Akron native, defeated Republican Madison Gesiotto Gilbert by more than 14,000 votes (52.5%) to the delight of a crowd gathered at Akron's Civic Theatre. Statewide, Democrats lost every race handily while managing to keep local Statehouse seats in Columbus.

In Akron, 61% voters also supported Issue 10, a citizen initiative to create a community oversight board for the Akron Police Department.

Tuesday's results are final, unofficial counts pending absentee ballots received by the deadline and provisional ballots. Final official vote counts will take place later this month.

Former Trump aide Max Miller wins US House seat for Medina, Wayne

(AP) — Former Trump administration official Max Miller won a U.S. House seat in Ohio in a victory bolstered by the ex-president’s endorsement and the exits of two Republican congressmen. Miller defeated Democrat Matthew Diemer and was a clear favorite after winning in the GOP primary. Miller served as both a campaign and White House aide to former President Donald Trump. Miller initially launched his campaign to replace Republican Anthony Gonzalez after Gonzalez voted to impeach Trump for his role in inciting the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. But Gonzalez retired and so did Republican Bob Gibbs, clearing the way Miller.

How elections work: How does Summit County safeguard its elections? We go behind the scenes to find out

How many people voted early?

Ohioans set a record for early and absentee voting in a midterm and governor's election with nearly 1.4 million ballots already cast as of 2 p.m. Monday, an increase of 4% from 2018.

Early in-person voting jumped from 429,521 to 549,771 this year, while absentee requests were down 6% to 1,000,669. Absentee ballots postmarked by Monday or returned to the board of elections in person by 7:30 p.m. will still be added.

Registered Democrats in Summit County have already cast 26,249 early ballots compared to 12,436 from registered Republicans. When processed before the polls close today, these early ballots should give Democrats the appearance of an early advantage in some races. But as the in-person Election Day votes of nonpartisans and Republicans roll in from polling locations across the county, that appearance of a lead is expected to dwindle.

In Greater Akron, here's how many ballots have already been cast this year and in 2018.

  • Summit: 62,174 (58,613)

  • Portage: 18,102 (15,545)

  • Stark: 40,570 (36,419)

  • Medina: 30,485 (25,287)

  • Wayne: 12,024 (10,088)

Democrats had already surpassed their total number of early ballots cast in the 2018 about a week ago, according to Beacon Journal analysis of Summit County Board of Elections data. With figures available through Monday, 2022 early balloting was already up 22% for Democrats. Early voting for registered Republicans (down 2%) and unaffiliated voters (down 4%) should finish near their 2018 levels as thousands of mail-in ballots were expected to arrive on or after Election Day. These late-arriving ballots can count if postmarked by Nov. 7 and received by Nov. 18.
