Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank giving Thanksgiving turkeys to local families

The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank officially started its giveaway of Thanksgiving turkeys Sunday.

Turkeys were given out at the Pittsburgh King School in the city’s North Side neighborhood.

More than 250 turkeys were given away in the first day. A representative from the food bank said those turkeys were given away within an hour.

Other Thanksgiving food items were also distributed.

“So we had turkeys, squash, carrots, we had apples, stuffing mashed potatoes, cranberries,” said Rachel Martone with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

The Pittsburgh Pirates, Steelers and Penguins will join the food bank for another event giveaway event on Nov. 22.

The event is meant to support families who are struggling to put food on the table.

Inflation and rising heat costs have led to a higher need of food this year and the food bank has spent more money on turkeys and other items this year than others.
