Greece man convicted in 2021 double homicide in apartment building

A Greece man on Tuesday was convicted in a 2021 double homicide in an apartment building on Chestnut Street in Rochester.

A Monroe County Court jury on Tuesday found Timothy Brown, 30, guilty of two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, all felonies, in the early morning Nov. 11, 2021 killing of Tywan Harper, 22, of Rochester, and Malakai Smith, 19, of Greece, according to the Monroe County District Attorney's Office.

Harper and Smith were shot and beaten to death in a stairwell of 35 Chestnut St., an apartment building where Harper lived. The two slain men were friends.

Brown was arrested at his Greece home about a month after the killings.

“Timothy Brown went to Tywan Harper’s apartment with the intent to kill him,” said Assistant District Attorney Michael Robertson, who prosecuted the case. “It is clear that he did not hesitate to violently take two young lives in the course of his crime.”

“Timothy Brown did not consider the value of these men’s lives, their loved ones, or his own life which will now be spent in the New York State Department of Corrections," Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley said in a news release. "Timothy Brown is a dangerous individual who needs to take accountability for his actions."

Brown is scheduled to be sentenced on July 28 in Monroe County Court by Acting Judge Richard Healy. He faces a minimum of 20 years to Life and a maximum of life without the possibility of parole.
