Green Up Day 2022: These towns are gathering to do more than pick up trash

Some Vermont towns are taking advantage of warmer weather and lessening COVID restrictions to do more than clear roadside trash for Green Up Day, May 7.

Volunteers have the chance to win prizes, sweet treats and more.

The distinguishable green bags are already available in most places for anybody wanting to get outside earlier than Saturday. Details about when and where to pick one up for your town can be found at greenupvermont.org.

Here are a few of the towns offering additional motivation to get outside and rally in environmental efforts to clean up Vermont.

Williston town fair

Williston is hosting a town fair that coincides with this year's Green Up Day— the first of its kind, according to the town's website.

The fair will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Village Green and feature historic schoolhouse tours, a library story time, a meet-and-greet with Rep. Erin Brady, snacks, and the chance to win prizes.

Free coffee, donuts in Winooski

Reward your efforts with a sweet treat this weekend in Winooski and a boost of energy to keep extra alert to the dangers of roadside scouring.

Volunteers who stop by the Winooski Senior Center to collect their bags will be offered free coffee and donuts, according to the city's Facebook.

"Participants are also invited to check out live woodworking demonstrations by Tom Locatell, the 'Artist in Residence' at the Winooski Senior Center," the city's website says. "Tom is locally famous for his special woodworking projects made from hewing fallen trees in the Gilbrook Nature Area."

South Hero 'Thank You' barbeque

Volunteers who spend their morning cleaning up roadsides and beaches are invited to a free barbeque from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Folsom Education and Community Center Playground.

There will be burgers, hot dogs, and vegetarian burger options, according the South Hero Facebook.

Green Up Vermont asks participants to wear gloves and weather-appropriate clothing and to check themselves for ticks after coming in from outside.

Bright clothes will make it easier for drivers to see and avoid participants.

The National Weather Service in Burlington forecasts sunny skies with a high of 64 degrees on Saturday.
