Greene County High School student remains hospitalized; another released

May 18—WOODVILLE, Ga. — One of two Greene County High School students seriously injured in a single-car crash earlier this month, remains hospitalized, authorities say.

The wreck happened Sunday, May 8, shortly after 7 a.m. on Grey Land Road.

The injured teens were identified as Paola M. Carrasco, 17, of the 2200 block of Grey Land Road, Greensboro; and Anecia Swain, 17, of the 400 block of Sycamore Circle, Greensboro, according to Sgt. First Class Justin C. Howard, commander of the Georgia State Patrol post in Madison.

Both teens were treated at the scene by firefighters/first responders with Greene County Fire Rescue and personnel with the Greene County Emergency Medical Services. They were later taken by ambulances to Piedmont Athens Hospital in Athens.

Sgt. Howard, who investigated the wreck, said Carrasco was driving a 2009 Nissan Altima westbound on Grey Land Road. The car traveled slightly off the right edge of the roadway while the driver was negotiating a curve to the left.

"In an attempt to regain her initial lane of travel, the driver overcorrected her steering, which resulted in her losing control, as the vehicle began to spin in a counterclockwise direction," Howard said in his report. "While spinning, the vehicle traveled across both lanes and exited the roadway onto the southern shoulder. The vehicle then traveled down a slight embankment and entered a tree line where it struck a standing tree wth its driver side."

Howard said the area of impact was at the base of the embankment on the southern side of Grey Land Road within the tree line. The investigating state trooper said such was determined by the final resting point of the vehicle, debris, and tree damage, which was all visible to him when he arrived on the scene.

Howard said the passenger told him via cellphone that they were traveling at the time to her residence. She recalled that they saw a deer before they wrecked. The passenger also said the car belonged to her boyfriend.

The trooper said a dog, in the car at the time of the crash, did not survive.
