Green's statewide victory advances her nationals

Mar. 8—CHAPEL HILL — An Early College High School senior won an annual state-level speech contest on Saturday. By winning, she advances to national competition.

On Saturday, March 4, Paige Greene won the Department (State) of North Carolina Oratorical Constitutional Scholarship Contest, eld at American Legion Post 6 in Chapel Hill. Greene, of Hudson, attends the Caldwell County Early College High School, and was the clear winner, of the five contestants, representing the five Divisions in the State.

Greene is sponsored by the Dysart-Kendall American Legion Post 29 in Lenoir. Paige will now travel to Indianapolis, Indiana to compete in the National Finals of the contest to be held in April, with finalists from all states. The annual Oratorical Contest is based upon the United States Constitution and requires the contestant to speak from memory, their own original speech of at least 8 minutes, but not more than 10 minutes. They also have to speak on some aspect of a clause or an amendment of the Constitution, of which one of four options is selected for from 3 to 5 minutes.

This year's top prizes for the National Contest are $25,000 for first, $22,000 for second and $20,000 for third, with additional prizes along the way. The contest begins in December and information will be distributed soon after school starts. The contest is open to all students in grades nine through 12, including home-schooled students and Christian schools.
