May 31—GUILFORD COUNTY — A Greensboro businessman has announced he is making his first run for elected office a try for the U.S. Senate.

Kenneth J. Harper Jr., the owner of insurance business Harpco Inc., will run in the Republican primary.

In a press release, Harper describes himself as "a self-made business owner" who "understands the struggles and the challenges that can seem insurmountable for the average citizen."

Although it is his first run for elected office, he bills that as a positive. He emphasizes his business and community background and his Christian faith.

"Kenneth J. Harper Jr. is not a politician," his press release said. "He is a leader, a neighbor, and a friend."

Harper and his wife, Sarah, have four daughters and an 8-month-old grandson.
