Greensburg Turkey Trot registration begins; YMCA partners with race committee

Sep. 22—Registration is open for Greensburg's annual Turkey Trot, set for Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24.

This year, the race committee is partnering with the Greensburg YMCA, which is helping with pre-race operations and promotion of the Thanksgiving Day 5K run/walk.

The Y also is among multiple community nonprofits that will benefit from the race proceeds.

"We are really excited to have the Greensburg YMCA join the Turkey Trot for this year's race and beyond," said Mark Sorice, race committee chairman and one of the event founders. "This race is more than just a competitive event; it is a signature community event that benefits many great organizations. The community has always supported the Turkey Trot in a big way."

"We look forward to our contribution in promoting and organizing the race, to maintain the tremendous success and popularity it has enjoyed for the past 30 years," said Suzanne Printz, CEO of the Greensburg YMCA.

The Turkey Trot annually attracts more than 2,000 participants.

The race will begin at 9 a.m. at the corner of Pittsburgh and Main streets in downtown Greensburg. The course heads into neighboring Southwest Greensburg, continues back into the city and ends on Pennsylvania Avenue, behind the Westmoreland County Courthouse.

Race registration can be completed online at gbgturkeytrot.com. Downloadable forms also can be completed and mailed.

Through Nov. 7, registration costs $25 for adults, $15 for kids age 13 or younger, and includes a T-shirt. Afterward, the cost increases to $35 for all participants.

Race packets and shirts can be picked up at the Greensburg YMCA gymnasium, 101 S. Maple Ave., from noon to 6 p.m. Nov. 21-23. Registration and shirt pick-up on Nov. 24 will be from 7 to 8:30 a.m. at the Greensburg No. 2 Fire House, 137 N. Main St.

The Turkey Trot was created by five friends who ran every day at lunch. They formed a nonprofit called Westmoreland Community Sharing to develop the race and to raise funds to assist local organizations.

The race has evolved into a USA Track & Field-certified course and is recognized for national records.

The event is open to both serious and casual runners, who can register individually or as part of a group.

Awards will be presented to the top three finishers in various categories.
