Greenville County Schools extends contract of Superintendent Dr. Burke Royster. What to know.

On Tuesday, Nov. 7, Superintendent Burke Royster received an exemplary evaluation in his annual performance review by the Greenville County Schools Board of Trustees.

The Board unanimously approved to extend Royster’s contract through June 30, 2027, due to his positive evaluation.

Financial details and Dr. Royster's annual salary were not made available Tuesday night. According to a 2021 report on GoUpstate.com, Royster is the highest-paid Superintendent in South Carolina, earning more than $280,000 annually.

According to a GCS press release, Royster's leadership was assessed in six categories in keeping with the Board Policy CEI:

  • Instructional Leadership

  • Quality Personnel

  • Culture of Achievement

  • Organizational, Operational and Resource Management

  • Communications and Community Relationships

  • Tone from the Top

In 2012, Royster became the 10th Superintendent of Greenville County Schools, the largest school district in South Carolina and 44th largest district in the nation. He has been named an Education Week "Leader to Learn From" and was selected as the South Carolina Association of School Administrators’ 2018 Superintendent of the Year.

Both the Superintendent and the Board of Trustees are committed to providing our students with the best educational experiences, and by focusing on college- and career-readiness, the possibilities for their futures are endless.”
