More plans for the new elementary school at the former J.L. Mann High School site were revealed during the Greenville County school board meeting on Tuesday.

The facility is being designed at just over 110,000 square feet at a capacity of 750 students with future expansion capability for another 250.

As a project-based school, the academic curriculum will be the same as all Greenville County Schools, but the focus will be environmental science. Areas such as science labs and a greenhouse are included in the site plan.

"This will pair well with our Roper Mountain Science Center and the new sustainability building we opened the building last year," Associate Superintendent for Academics Jeff McCoy said.

McCoy added that they will be looking to do some partnerships as they have contacted some of the same people who have to help design some of that sustainability curriculum and activities there.

Though the district has not yet approved an attendance zone for the school, the school district wants to encourage as much choice as possible to fill out the building.

"Every school, I believe, that we recommended in this administration for attendance has been focused on providing as much choice as possible, providing a small geographic attendance area assigned to the school," Greenville County Schools Superintendent Burke Royster said.

The new elementary school will relieve crowding from the following elementary schools: Sara Collins Elementary, Buena Vista Elementary, Woodland Elementary, Mauldin Elementary and Pelham Road Elementary.

The site plan is still in the "schematic design phase," but is on schedule to break ground on the facility this fall and open in August 2024.
