Greenway Snow Day canceled due to warmth and snow melt

Jan. 29—GRAND FORKS — The Grand Forks Park District has canceled the Greenway Snow Day event for Saturday, Feb. 3, due to warm temperatures and a lack of snow.

The event was set to take place in Lincoln Drive Park and feature a cardboard sled race and horse-drawn sleigh rides. The park district announcement said that the event will occur next year when there is — hopefully — better snow.

Temperatures in Grand Forks have been 20 to 30 degrees above average for this time of year. The average temperature at the end of January is in the upper teens, and temperatures the last week have been well over. The high temperature in Grand Forks on Monday was recorded at 42 degrees. Grand Forks has seen near-record high temperatures for the last few days with temperatures more akin to the middle of March than the end of January.

The forecast also doesn't see a reprieve in the late January heat wave. According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, high temperatures are going to stay well above normal for at least the next week; likely melting much of the snow cover that's left.
