Greenwood comes together to help officer who lost wife, home in Friday morning fire

Greenwood Police Senior Officer Laun D. Harris, JR, was working Friday morning when he received the news no husband or grandfather wants to hear.

At 1:32 a.m. Bossier City Police and Fire Department responded to a house fire in the 1700 block of Alison Avenue.

Upon arrival, Bossier Fire Department found the home completely engulfed in flames. Firefighters searched the home and located Harris' wife she was unresponsive and a grandson was taken to Ochsner LSU Health for smoke inhalation and minor burns.

The Bossier City Fire Department and Louisiana State Fire Marshal are currently investigating the fire.

"The house is a total loss, and of course, he has lost his wife and his grandson was injured in the fire. Right now we are trying to get some basic needs covered," Shayne Gibson, Greenwood Police Chief said.

Greenwood has come together to get Harris and his grandson clothing, food and toiletries. Greenwood Police Department has set up a bank account (Laun Dale Harris Jr. Benefit Fund) for anyone wishing to make monetary donations.

Donations can be made at the Hancock Whitney Bank located at 8360 W. 70th Street Greenwood, LA 71033.

Money can be dropped off in person at the location or mailed to the bank.
