Greenwood man dies when car leaves Ind. 38, crashes

RICHMOND, Ind. — A Greenwood man died Sunday when his vehicle left Indiana 38 east of King Road.

Justin Schmichel was ejected from his 2018 Honda Civic and died at the scene, according to Sheriff Randy Retter in a news release.

Sheriff's deputies responded about 9:15 a.m. although Retter said the crash likely occurred around 2 a.m. Wethington's vehicle was eastbound on Ind. 38 when it left the south side of the roadway, the release said. It struck a guardrail, jumped a small river and fence before wedging between two trees.

Speed is thought to be a factor in the single-vehicle crash, according to the release. The investigation continues.

Wayne County Emergency Communications, Webster Fire Department, Richmond Fire Department drone team, Reid Health EMS, Richmond Fire Department and the Centerville Police Department assisted the sheriff's department. Ind. 38 was intermittently closed while officers investigated and Pardo's Towing & Recovery removed the Honda.

Schmichel, 21, is the seventh person to die this year from incidents on Wayne County roadways. Three of those who have died have been motorcyclists and another was a pedestrian.
