Greg Gard among Wisconsin's winter sports coaches to receive a one-year extension

MADISON – The University of Wisconsin athletic board on Friday approved one-year contract extensions for five winter sports coaches.

The most noteworthy extension was for men’s basketball coach Greg Gard, whose contract runs through May 31, 2028.

That move was expected despite the fact that the Badgers suffered through a disappointing 2022-23 season.

They finished 9-11 in the Big Ten, lost in the opening round of the league tournament to Ohio State and failed to qualify for the NCAA Tournament.

UW advanced to the semifinals of the NIT but suffered a 56-54 loss to North Texas to finish the season with a 20-15 overall mark.

That came one season after UW won a share of the Big Ten regular-season title for the second time in three seasons.

The Badgers from 2018-19 through 2021-22 went 53-27 in Big Ten play, winning more games than any other team in the league.

That led to a new contract for Gard, which was approved last year by the UW Board of Regents.

Gard was given a raise of $900,000, to $3.55 million before this past season. The buyout was increased to $12 million from just $1 million for the first three seasons of the new deal.

UW athletic director Chris McIntosh did not attend the athletic board meeting Friday because he was out of town.

However, McIntosh told the Journal Sentinel last June that Gard’s restructured contract was a reward for his overall body of work, including winning two league titles.

“It is absolutely a commitment to Coach Gard,” McIntosh said at the time. “And it is one that he has earned. The results speak for themselves.”

The other contracts extended Friday:

Marisa Moseley (women’s basketball), through May 31, 2028; Yuri Suguiyama (swimming and diving), through May 31, 2028; Mark Johnson (women’s hockey), through June 30, 2028; and Chris Bono (wrestling), through May 31, 2028.
